Sylvia Henneberg, The Creative Crone: Aging and the Poetry of May Sarton and Adrienne Rich (University of Missouri, 2010) 203 pp.
Henneberg explores the effects and meaning of aging in each poet’s work, using each to illuminate the other in an integrated study. Valuable for its close reading of Rich’s later work, through The School Among the Ruins (2004). Rather than isolating Rich and Sarton in separate chapters Henneberg juxtaposes each woman’s writing and ideas in ways that are valuable for each, as well as her own larger project.
