Reading-Adrienne-Rich-Tmb.jpgReading Adrienne Rich: Reviews and Re-Visions, 1951-1981
(University of Michigan, 1984) 300 pp., (paper). Part of Michigan’s excellent “Under Discussion” series on American poets, this collection of essays and reviews traces the changes in Rich’s poetry and politics from 1951 through the beginning of the 1980s, concentrating on the women’s explorations that are at the heart of her work. Along with essays by Judith McDaniel, Claire Keyes, and Wendy Martin interpreting Rich’s work from an historical perspective are reviews of her work by poets including W. H. Auden, Donald Hall, Margaret Atwood, Hayden Carruth, and Philip Booth that document the reception of her poetry and the changing consciousness of her readers.
